Introduction

The following terms have been used in this module and it is recommended that they are followed by all those conducting risk assessments

    Term

    Definition

    Consequences or severity

      The results provided if the potential for loss is realised.

       

        Exposure

          How often and for how long employees are exposed to a hazard.

            Frequency

              The rate of the occurrence of something.

                Harm

                  Injury or loss.

                    Hazard

                      Condition or practice with the potential to cause harm.

                        Likelihood

                          Chance per unit time (usually per year).

                            Probability

                              A ratio expressing the chance that a certain event will occur.

                                Risk

                                  The likelihood that harm from a particular hazard will occur (“the chance of harm or loss”).
